Occupational therapy and mental health. Interpretation of behaviors: sensory, motor, social/emotional, language, cognition. How occupational therapy can address developmental issues holistically when utilizing a relationship based approach.

Learning Objectives:
1. Understand how to interpret behaviors using a different lens
2. Learn how to explain to families what occupational therapy treatment addresses
3. Differentiate between traditional occupational therapy and relationship-based OT

Bio

Esther is the clinical director at Kick Start Pediatric Therapy Network. She is a certified and licensed occupational therapist. She received her Master’s degree in occupational therapy at the University of Illinois, Chicago. She is a certified early intervention evaluator and provider for the state of Illinois. Esther has worked with infants through school-aged children in a variety of settings including hospital inpatient and outpatient, the Illinois Early Intervention System, schools and private clinics. Esther is SIPT® certified (Sensory Integration and Praxis Test) and has received extensive training in many treatment approaches including DIR®/Floortime®/relationship based therapy,  NDT®, Therapeutic Listening®, Kinesio-taping, and Sensory Integration. She has experience working with children with a variety of diagnoses as well as working closely with parents to assess and develop treatment strategies to help regulate their children and increase functional performance. Esther has worked intensely over the years collaborating with outside team members and as part of in house multi-disciplinary teams to ensure comprehensive treatment planning for her clients and families.

NOTE: This presentation meets the ethics requirements for social work license renewal

On the 4th Thursday of every month, The Theraplay® Institute (TTI) hosts a meeting of attachment-focused mental health professionals, educators, and healthcare providers. The group includes professionals who work in private practices, adoption agencies, nonprofits, hospitals, and schools.  Attachment Matters offers the opportunity to meet professionals with similar interests and gain valuable skills and information.  This meeting will be from 9-11AM at The Theraplay® Institute, 1840 Oak Ave, Suite 320, Evanston, IL, 60201.
