The Theraplay Institute provides a 4-5 session relationship assessment to help determine the quality of parent-child relationship with our special videotaped assessment process called the Marschack Interaction Method (MIM). The MIM affords an opportunity for parents to learn about the interactions in their relationship with their child that might be contributing to the child’s behavioral problems. In addition to allowing a close look at problem areas in the relationship, the MIM provides a unique opportunity for observing the strengths of both adult and child and of their relationship. It is, therefore, a valuable tool determining how to help families strengthen their relationships. The description of the relationship that results from this observation is a valuable aid in determining the appropriateness of custody arrangements, reunification, foster placement and/or adoption.
In the first session, parents meet with a trained Theraplay clinician to discuss the developmental or behavioral concerns or questions that they parents have.
In sessions two and three, the child and one parent, and then the child and her other parent (if applicable), comes in to do a series of simple tasks designed to elicit a range of behaviors in the child. The MIM interaction takes from 30 to 60 minutes for the child with each of her parents. The interactions are videotaped. The therapist then reviews the videotaped interactions separately to prepare feedback for the parents.
Sessions four and five are feedback sessions, scheduled a week to two weeks after the taped assessment. Feedback includes showing parts of the videotape to demonstrate to the parents the most effective ways to engage and interact with the child. The clinician will discuss recommendations on how to deal with behavioral problems at home based on the results of the assessment. For an additional charge, the clinician will also provide written recommendations if requested.
