About Ted Hurst:
Ted Hurst (1921 – 2002) was a consulting psychologist who was awarded the contract to work with Chicago Head Start in 1967 that eventually led to the development of Theraplay®. When Worthington, Hurst and Associates took on this project to provide psychological services to children, Ted hired Dr. Ann Jernberg to direct the clinical program. At the time providing psychological services for preschool children was uncharted territory. Knowing there were not the resources to treat every child in need, Ted endorsed Ann’s innovative approach to use psychologists as consultants to teachers, while paraprofessionals trained in Theraplay® provided the direct clinical services. The results were noticeably and unequivocally positive. Ted was involved with the organization of The Theraplay Institute, and remained an active supporter until his death. This scholarship fund was created in his memory from donations made on his behalf. The focus on disadvantaged, inner city clientele stems from his many years of working with and supporting this population, and his desire to have others trained to provide this service.
